While the Mexico national “A” team has struggled a bit, the “B” team seemed to be firing on all cylinders as they stormed to victory over El Salvador in their opening round game in San Diego Sunday night. Elias Hernandez was the star for El Tri, scoring an amazing volley on a corner kick while also providing two assists. If Mexico winds up meeting the United States along the way, I’m somewhat worried that the U.S. fullbacks will struggle handling Hernandez. Mexico looked really good.
El Salvador shouldn’t hang their heads, as they performed admirably in front of a hostile, pro-Mexico crowd. They answered Mexico’s first goal with one of their own when Rodolfo Zelaya, who always seemed dangerous, fed a beautiful ball into Nelson Bonilla, who one-timed it into the corner. Mexico, however, did a fairly good job of containing El Salvador’s counter. For my money, these are the two best teams in the group, and El Salvador seems more than capable of moving to the next round.
